VY2/PE-002: Caledonia

Two weeks into a month long road trip through New England and Canada, and so far not one SOTA activation. Apart from one failed attempt at W1/EM-054 Spruce Mountain (woodland too dense at end of trail) we just hadn’t made much of an effort to get out, so this was a relatively easy drive-n-grab affair to break that duck.

Ascent

Park the car by the roadside cemetery gates, walk up the dirt track for about 200 yards.

Summit

None to speak of, just a track wide enough for one vehicle and some commercial antenna towers. Noticed some QRM on 40m but 20m wasn’t too bad.

Contacts

The bands were fairly quiet and without an actual summit to help my wire much beyond a lazy horizontal we weren’t exactly spoilt for choice, but a couple of US stations allowed me to interrupt their QSO, and I was pleasantly surprised to get a decent report from Cornwall thanks to Geoff G0FHT. Other highlights included two Swedish stations and one from California, though unfortunately my response to some HUBnet regulars Kevin G6ZDP and Dave G0OMK weren’t received. Oh well, that’s eight in the bag anyway, including a S2S with Eric VE2EO in Canada.
